Heavy Equipment Operators

A Heavy Equipment Operator is a skilled tradesperson who operates and maintains heavy machinery, such as bulldozers, excavators, and cranes, to move earth, rock, and other materials at construction sites, mines, and other industrial facilities. They must have a good understanding of equipment operation and maintenance, as well as safety regulations and site plans. Heavy Equipment Operators work in a variety of settings, including outdoor and remote locations, and must be physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions. They must follow strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries on the job.

Attend info session

Apprenticeship

3000 hours of on-the-job training, supplemented by one 12-week block of in-class technical training.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operate heavy equipment to excavate, move, load, and grade earth, rock, gravel, or other materials.
Operate computer-controlled equipment.
Conduct pre-operational and post-operational checks.
Operate two-way radios and other communication equipment.
Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes and bulldozers, to lift, move, or place equipment or materials.
Inspect, clean, lubricate, and refill equipment as part of routine maintenance.
