A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic is a skilled tradesperson who installs, repairs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They must have a good understanding of refrigeration and air conditioning systems, as well as electrical and mechanical systems. Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanics may be responsible for installing and repairing refrigeration and air conditioning units, ductwork, and ventilation systems. They must also be able to diagnose and repair system malfunctions and perform regular maintenance to keep systems operating efficiently. They work in a variety of settings and must follow strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries on the job.

  • Ability to lift heavy materials and stand for long periods

Minimum Standards

  • Grade 12 Diploma preferred (Grade 10 minimum)
     

Apprenticeship

9000 hours of on-the-job training, supplemented by three 8-week sessions of in-class technical training.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design, set up, initiate, link, uphold, service, mend, test, confirm, commission, and decommission refrigeration and air conditioning systems, electronic components, and their accessories.

  • Install and connect piping to convey various refrigerants for both primary and secondary heating and cooling purposes.

  • Inspect and verify the operation and integrity of components.

  • Replace faulty, leaking, discolored, and worn components.

  • Execute shut-downs and lockouts.

  • Clean and lubricate components.

  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, and connect pipes to functional components, utilities, and services.

Certified Tradesperson Wage:
Approx: $56/hr
